Types of Eagles in Idaho
Idaho is home to a variety of eagle species, including the American Bald Eagle, Golden Eagle, and Northern Harrier. Each species has its own unique characteristics, behaviors, and habitats.
American Bald Eagle
The American Bald Eagle is the national bird of the United States and is found throughout the country. In Idaho, they can be seen near rivers, lakes, and wetlands throughout the state. Bald Eagles have a white head and tail, with a dark brown body. They have a wingspan of up to 7 feet and can weigh up to 14 pounds.
Bald Eagles feed on fish and other small animals, and can often be seen swooping down to capture their prey. They build their nests near water and can have up to three chicks.
Golden Eagle
The Golden Eagle is the second most common species of eagle found in Idaho. These majestic birds have a wingspan of up to 7.5 feet and can weigh up to 15 pounds. They have a golden-brown body and white head and tail.
Golden Eagles feed primarily on small mammals and birds, and can often be seen soaring in the sky looking for food. They make their nests in cliffs or trees, and can have up to four chicks.
Northern Harrier
The Northern Harrier is the smallest species of eagle found in Idaho. They have a wingspan of up to 4.5 feet and can weigh up to 2.5 pounds. They have a light brown body with a white head and tail.
Northern Harriers feed primarily on small rodents and birds, and can often be seen flying low to the ground. They build their nests on the ground, and can have up to five chicks.
