Exploring Idaho’s Hidden Gems: Lesser-Known Destinations
Idaho is a state with a wealth of natural beauty and hidden gems, from the rugged mountains of the Sawtooth Range to the lush forests of the Clearwater National Forest. While many of these destinations are well-known, there are also a number of lesser-known spots that are just as worth a visit. Here are a few of our favorites:
The Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness
The Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness is one of the largest wilderness areas in the lower 48 states, and it’s home to some of the most rugged and remote terrain in Idaho. The wilderness is bisected by the Middle Fork of the Salmon River, which offers some of the best white-water rafting in the country. The wilderness is also home to a variety of wildlife, including bears, wolves, elk, and moose.
The Sawtooth Mountains
The Sawtooth Mountains are a subrange of the Rocky Mountains, and they’re located in the central part of Idaho. The mountains are known for their jagged peaks, crystal-clear lakes, and abundant wildlife. There are a number of hiking trails in the Sawtooth Mountains, ranging from easy day hikes to challenging multi-day backpacking trips.
The Craters of the Moon National Monument
The Craters of the Moon National Monument is a volcanic field located in south-central Idaho. The monument is home to a variety of volcanic features, including cinder cones, lava tubes, and maars. The monument is also home to a number of hiking trails, as well as camping and picnicking areas.
The City of Rocks National Reserve
The City of Rocks National Reserve is a unique geological formation located in southwestern Idaho. The reserve is home to a number of towering sandstone formations, which were created by wind and water erosion over millions of years. The reserve is also home to a variety of wildlife, including birds, lizards, and snakes.
The Owyhee Canyonlands
The Owyhee Canyonlands are a remote region of southern Idaho that is home to a variety of canyons, mesas, and buttes. The canyonlands are also home to a number of hiking trails, as well as camping and fishing areas.
